I want to make a built-in shelf for my big screen TV, but my lack of experience in carpentry is hindering my progress. I have an idea, and I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me if it will work, and what size screws, brackets, chain, etc. that would be best. As I said, my experience is very limited, so I'm not even sure if my idea is feasible. The tv is a DLP rear projection, about 59" wide, 20" deep, 38" tall, and weighs about 160 lbs. Here's my idea: 1. Mount a 48" long 2x4 to the wall w/ screws 2. Install a 24"x64" MDF or plywood (3/4 to 1" thick) shelf. Mount to the 2x4 and wall w/ brackets and screws 3. Install 4 steel hooks. 2 at the corners of the shelf furthest from the wall, and 2 into studs on the wall, about 2 or 3 feet above the shelf. 4. Connect each hook on the wall to the nearest hook on the shelf with a thick steel chain With the proper hardware, would it be strong enough to support the TV? I am trying to install a handrail leading to my basement and need a little guidance. The stairs are L shaped. First set has 6 steps then there is a 4x4 landing followed by 8 more step. How long does the rail need to be and how far apart should the hardware be spaced?
