stain/polyurethane or assemble first?

I purchased a pine buffet/hutch that I'd like to stain and coat with polyurethane. I'm wondering if I should assemble it first and then finish it, or the other way around?

Does it matter?

Thanks!

Hi themoonlady,

Welcome to the forums

Are these assembled components that go together? Like an assembled hutch that attaches to the top of an assembled buffet? If so, I would stain/poly the pieces separatly prior to attching them together.

If it is unassembled pieces for the buffet and hutch that need complete assembly - that require glue joints and/or twist lock joinery (or other joinery methods), then assemble first before stain/poly.

Your question was a little vague, so I hope I've answered you're question.

It was the second one: I have unassembled pieces.

OK, I'll assemble it first then! Thanks for the help.

It is easier to stain and poly everything first BUT along with affecting any glue joints it also might make any tight fits too tight because of the increase size [even though it is slight] of the pieces.

Poly will most definitley affect the strength of the glue joints. It will not allow glue to "wick" into the pores of the wood.
