Another handrail question.

On my stairway going from my 1st to 2nd floor. Do I have to have a handrail on both sides of the stairway? One side has the post and handrail. The other side is just a plaster wall. Am I within code just using the handrail on the stairs?

Not sure if there is a code issue here or not, for private residences, but fwiw, I only have a handrail on 1 side. Been like that since day 1 after the addition...20+ yrs ago.

Welcome to the forums! As far as code, it would be local, so check with them first. If you do have to add one, the only code item I can think of is you will have to return each end to the wall so you don't have a "pocket catcher" on the ends. After a trial fit, measure from the handrail to the wall and cut a 45 degree angle to where it will return to the wall. Swap the pieces (top to bottom) and you have the returns made. Glue and nail them in place.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info so far. Hey Jatco, I own a Larrivee guitar that I bought two years ago. Those are made in Vancouver I think. Do you know of the place?
