TV Stand

I am wanting to build a TV stand for my 32' Inch Sony TV to sit on. I have a TV that sits in a Cut-Away in my my wall, probably 5 feet off the ground.

What I am wanting to do is to build a platform for it to sit on that will essentially raise it up enough for me to store my DirecTV Receiver, DVD Player, etc...

My question is this: How thick of a piece of board do I need to support the TV? Also, is there any recommendations on building this? Is some wood better than others?

Thanks in advance for the help!

To span 32+" with a load of gadgets, i would use 5/4 stock or 3/4 multiy layer(cabinet grade )plywood. You could also build in a piece of small angle iron as a reinforcement, that would allow using thinner stock.

If I got the 3/4 Plywood, would it be ok to make the legs out of that as well?

I am trying to minimize the amount of money I am spending on this as I am also going to need to paint it.

Thanks again for the help!!
