Shelf Brackets

Hi,
I wanted to make some shelf brackets out of some left over plywood and I think it is either 5/8" or 3/4" thick. I was just wondering how much weight it would hold and how wide of a strip I would need to support at least 100lbs per shelf.
Or is this just a bad idea from conception to end?

You can build them of plywood, but buying the shelf supports with a spanner rod is cheap enough and very strong. Use your plywood for the shelves themselves. If you need to use the plywood, make the supports at least 2-3" wide, flat top, flat against the wall and 45 degree cut on the spanner to make a trapezoid, screw them all together.
