Need to build a 1' x 1' Square Wood Box

This is the basic of the basic. I'm just using regular plywood as well.

Does anyone have a schematic for this? Do I use nails or screws. Box needs to have a hinged lid to store stuff inside...do I put the hinges on the inside or outside?

I'm a complete novice. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Come back with an answer to the following question & we'll go from there:

Is the 1' the inside or outside measurement?

Hmmmm - good question. So what I have is pre-cut 2 ' x 2' pieces of plywood that I'm cutting into 4 pieces. I understand that once the box is assembled it will probably be a little bit bigger than 1' x 1.

I'm imagining the way it needs to go together is putting three pieces together in the shape of square "C" - doing two of these and then putting those two new shape together with one of the shapes going on the outer part.

Does that make sense?

What size plywood (thickness) are you using? Don't worry, we are going to give you the exact size to cut your plywood so it fits perfectly. But we need info.

The plywood pieces are 3/8" thick.

OK, your base and top will be 12" x 12". The sides will be 11 1/4 x 12", and will sit inside the top and bottom. The two remaining sides will be 11 1/4 x 11 1/4" and will fit inside both the top/bottom and the sides. I would construct it as you have said, lay the bottom down, attach the two 11 1/4 x 12" sides forming a "C". Then insert the two smaller sides, and finally the top. Fastening them will be tricky, so you may want to install some 1x1 cleats on the inside of the box to nail to. Virtually they are small pieces of wood in the corners, running along the inside. Nailing a 3/8" piece of plywood will test your temper. I hope my measurements were right, and if not someone will blast me shortly. Post back if I am unclear, or if you need help.
