MDF for kitchen cabinet doors?

I 'm building kitchen cabinet doors and was wondering if using a 5/8 in MDF would be okay for the raised panel portion? I will be using some kind of hardwood for the door framing (whatever is cheap). The main reason for the MDF is that my wife wants them painted white anyways so I don't see why i would go to all the trouble/expense of using solid wood for the panel. If it is okay is just a home depot special 4X8 sheet of MDF okay or is there better quality stuff I should use?

thanks!

I had a custom cabinet shop build my kitchen for me and they used MDF for the panel and poplar for the frames. 1 coat primer and 2 coats oil pant.......they look beautiful. no shrinkage with the panel and the MDF takes paint super. The depot stuff is fine as long as its not wet or damp or warped.

Its okay

MDF is fine for door panels. Hopefully your not making raised panels. The edges of MDF are not nearly as easy to paint as the surfaced face and it you really have to becareful with a big panel bit on MDF. Good luck
