Newby needs advice about deck

Hi, a carpenter friend gave me rough plans for a 12x12 deck using 4 upright posts. My wife wants to go to a 16x16. Can I still get away with 4 uprights, properly spaced, or should I put in 2 more? It's really hard digging! The deck is only 2 ft. off the ground. No roof or other built on stuctures. Thoughts?

Span is based on degree of deflection under load. With the proper load bearing components (soil bearing capacity, footing, column/post, beam/girder) free spans of forty feet or more are possible. If you know little or nothing of these things, hand your wife a pick & shovel, or stick with the design.

Deck

Think about the post requirements for the deck railing. If it were my deck, I would add 3 posts to the 16x16 design.
