Hardwood floor & carpet (glue?)

We are pulling up the carpet over hardwood floors in a house we just bought. There seems to be a reddish colored (glue) or something underneath especially along the edges. We just started so we are not sure how much is in the middle.

How do we remove this? It would be nice to save money and not have them sanded. They seem to be in great condition otherwise.

I tried scraping at a little piece but will end up scratching the floor if I go at it with any gusto.

Try solvents -- in increasing strength -- start with paint thinner, alcohol, acetone, etc. up to goof-off which will probably take anything off. But beware -- a solvent might soften/remove the finish on the rest of the wood. But that may also give you a clue to the finish used on the old wood.

You might not have to sand the whole floor, but you may have to put down a new finish on top to smooth out the edges. If you do, you can put down one or two coats on the bared areas, sand the edges lightly to level with the rest of the floor, then a top coat over it all.

good luck
