Stop end grain timber splitting

If the pilot is the correct size for the screw, countersunk and the screw isn't overdriven as shown in the clip, the wood won't split.

Also, to keep end splitting using nails, take the nail head, lay it flat where you will be driving it and tap it once across the grain. Pick the nail up and drive into the indentation. Tapping the head on the wood sends a shock wave through the wood and allows the nail to pass through it with minimal splitting if any at all. As far as the video, I would not drive anything that close to the edge, no matter what. There is no strength whether the wood splits or not.
