Ideas for bannister and railing

We live in a split foyer home, where the front entry goes directly into a half flight of stairs up, and a half flight down. The railings are spaced too far apart, so we need to replace the whole thing for the safety of our young boys. I'm wondering where to go to find ideas for the design of the bannister? Any websites with a lot of good pictures of different railings, bannisters, newel posts, etc.? Any other books or resources for design ideas? Please help point me in the right direction. I'd like to find a few nice examples, give them to a contractor, and have him build it off those examples.

It may look a little more busy than what you have but a little safer: install a baluster between each of the ones you have now. You will have to over drill, in height, the upper hole so the baluster will slide up and over into the hole in the bottom. This will be alot cheaper than rebuilding the entire balustrade. You can put that off until you replace the carpet or the kids leave home. And I think you only need additional balusters on the flat surfaces, and not down the staircase. Just a thought. BTW, you must have bought my old house! Identical design.

That's a good suggestion, Chandler. We'll consider it if the cost estimate is more than we can stomach. But the current bannister has some stability issues, as well as not being quite the style we like, so we'd prefer to replace it all. Any ideas for some resources to find design styles?

Here's one example I found:
Stair Parts | Stair Supplies | Staircase Parts - StairPartsUSA.com

Most of the homes in these pictures are fancier homes than our simple, small home. I'm looking for as many examples as I can find.
