Need to build a wooden handrail

I'm looking to build a wooden rail, possibly with metal balusters. The rail will replace the original iron rail that separated the kitchen from the sunken family room (split level home). It is a straight 8-10 feet rail. I have a good idea of the materials I will need (handrail, shoerail, balusters, etc...), but would appreciate any installation instructions or tips. Any links that could show me installation instructions or personal tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me out.

There is more to say on this subject than there is memory for here. This is not a simple one line or paragraph job. There are lots of good books on the subject, sounds like a good time to pick one up.

Lowes has aluminum balusters in various finishes in their outdoor decking area. They can be installed in 3/4 inch holes or over plastic thimbles you'll find in the same area.

That might give you a partial idea to start with.
