width of crown molding

I have 8 ft ceilings. What is the guideline for what width of crown molding I should use based on the height of ceilings?
I am considering using 3-5/8" or 4-1/4" wide. Which size should I go with?
If it matters, my baseboards are 4-1/2" wide.
Thanks

There's only one rule of thumb. The higher the ceilings, the wider your crown can be. Either of the moldings you state would look fine in 8' ceilings. Of course the smaller one would probably look less "weighty".

Also depends on the size of the room. Large crown will overpower a small room. Small crown gets lost in a large room.

Very good point, Bill. I have installed 7" crown with inverted speedbase for a backer in 8' ceilings, but the room was rather large.
