butcher block table top outside?

at the risk of sounding like a simpleton i ask any and all for advice on this. i came across an old butcherblock table top and i have had a plan to build a table for my backyard. is there any way to use this outdoors? i live in oregon which means rain, rain, rain and sunshine for a few months. i am open to changing my landscape design to incorperate this if it is possible. so if i have to build a shelter for it than so be it!

It depends on what it is made of and what was used for glue. My bet it will fall apart after a short exposure to the elements. And it won't be direct rain, but general moisture of the area, so just putting it under a shelter may not help keep it intact.

yeah, i thought that would be the case

i have resigned to the fact that in order to keep it outside i would have to practically encapsulate it in varnish. this option i am still rolling around in my head because the table i origionally planned to build was not going to have a real workable surface, so i will be bringing out cutting boards either way. the difference here is, i will have the nicest picinic table in the county. i still have reservations about doing this and thus rendering the butcher block useless for it's origional intent but perhaps this is it's next carnation.

any experience in this?
