Refinishing 1970's Pine Rocking Chair

I am refinishing a Pine Rocking Chair that was stained really dark, and I have sanded the stain off to the natural wood, and I plan to restain it to a cherry color. What steps should I follow before applying the stain, and is there any product recommendations? I know that pine stains unevenly, and would like to have it look as nice as possible when finished. Please help me with step by step recommendations. Thank You!

Welcome to the forums!

I'd wipe the wood down with a wet thinner rag and inspect to make sure you have removed all of the previous finish. Once you are sastisfied that it is all down to raw wood, you can apply a wood conditioner. It will make the pine accept the stain evenly although a side effect is the stain won't be as dark. Once the stain is good and dry you'll need to apply 3 coats of poly - sanding and removing dust between coats.
