mold on unfinished oak table

I am refinishing a solid oak table and accidently left a damp rag on the table overnight. The next day I discovered mold spots under the rag. I have heard you can use a 50/50 bleach/water solutions to kill the mold. Is this true....how do I know when the mold has been killed and/or is there a better method to get rid of it?

mold on oak table

A friend just told me it might not be mold because water turns oak black .....this happened 2 days ago and it is still black, should it go back to it's natural color once dry? Would mold be likely to grow over night, does it happen that quickly? Feeling frustrated.

What you most likely have is watermarks on the oak - not mold.

Oxalic acid (comes in a 1 lb powder form) mixed with hot water and applied to the entire top will remove the watermarks.

It will also lighten the entire top.

Oxalic acid is available at many hardware stores and big box stores.

If there is any finish or sealer ont he top, it must be removed before using the oxalic acid
