I have made a coffee table out of oak and plan to make two storage benches out of ash. They will be used in our family room and I have 2 kids, which means lots of wear.

Is is better to use polyurethane or tung oil for the finish? Which will endure the bumps and bruises?

Polyurethane, hands down.
Tung oil shows the wood much more nicely, but won't hold up nearly as well.

Mixing stain and varnish

I am replacing all my doors, door frames, and trim. To save time, can I mix stain with either urethane or lacquer and spray it? If this is possible, then what mixtures work best? I have seen this being done in new construction, but didn't pay attention.

mantel shelf

I am having a difficult time finding information on how to build a "floating" mantel type shelf. I would like to use different mouldings on the front but am unsure of how to construct the actual shelf or how to attach it to the wall. I need it to be Appro. 6 in. deep, 4 in. tall, and 12 feet long, spanning wall to wall. The sides will die into the adjoining walls and the self will serve as display. I have researched back issues and web sites but cannot seem to locate anything. All help would be appreciated!
