Baseboard install at transition from carpet to vinyl

In a room with carpet, the baseboard is installed 3/8" up off the floor. For a vinyl floor, the base is on top of the vinyl, which is less than 3/8" thick. At the spot where the 2 different floors meet, the base should be installed at 2 different heights. How do I keep the top of the base at the same height when the bottom of the base is at 2 different heights?

You either rip 3/8" off the bottom of the base on a table saw for ALL the areas with carpet, leaving the full base for your vinyl areas, or install the full base over the carpeted areas and glue an additional 3/8" onto the bottom of the base ONLY in the vinyl areas. Skip the glue on piece and add a baseshoe moulding in the vinyl areas if you prefer to hide the gap that way.
