Attaching a wood fireplace surround to a stone fireplace

Hi, I have a cut stone fireplace which goes from floor to ceiling with an attached raised hearth(like a shelf with stone brachets about a foot from the floor. I want to attach a wood fireplace surround to the stone wall. It would sit on the raised hearth, but I don't want all the weight on the hearth. What would be the best way to attach it to the stone? What kind of drill and drill bits? Thank you. Joan

There are rules about how close you can have wood to the firebox, check local code.

To answer your question, tapcons screws work well in stone or masonary. They require a very specific size hole(carbide masonary bit) for the size screw being used. Check home/hardware stores.

If the stone is smooth then construction adhesive (Liquid nail) will work. Just be sure to brace it while the adhesive dries.

Drilling

Drilling in the masonry joints requires a hammer drill and masonry bits.
