refinishing wood frame on medicine cabinet

Can you remove a wood frame on a recessed medicine cabinet? Mine is older and wearing thin on the white paint. I would like to remove it and gild it. I also would like to know if gilding it will be sturdy enough for handling it or will it wear thin too quickly?
Thanks,
Lori

Welcome to the forums! Guilding will be too fragile for the bathroom environment, especially if the paint is about gone. Is the medicine cabinet really "wood", or a veneered presswood? If the latter, you can remove the one you have and replace it with a niece wood one that will fit in the same hole. Shop around a little before you put too much time and money into an old one. Let us know how it goes.
