Nail Gun Questions

Hi All

I'm going to be doing a lot of remodelling and one of the things I'm doing is removing a load-bearing wall and installing a flush header (LVL's and ply). I need to install about 26 joist hangers for this. I'm buying a framing nailer.

There are two bostitch ones I'm looking at:

F28WW Bostitch F28WW 28 Degree Wire Weld Framing Nailer

F21PL Bostitch F21PL 21 Degree Plastic Collated Framing - Metal Connector Nailer

My local stores only seems to carry 28-degree nails.

The F21PL has a metal attachment. What is that for and do I need something like that to nail into metal joist hangers and electrical boxes or will a regular nail gun do the trick?

Thanks in advance

Mark

The tip for metal connectors is what you would use for the hangers. It centers the nail in the pre-punched holes.

I dunno about using ANY gun for electrical boxes. I believe most people use plastic that are held by 2 hand driven nails. Overhead boxes for lamps and such are normally screwed on.

One thing for any gun, esp if you buy it online, is to check for local availability of the required fasteners. They aren't all interchangeable.

If you mean the F28...you will have to hand nail your hangers. It's a straight framing nailer (wood to wood).

I hung a bunch of joist hangers using a palm nailer. Uses just standard nails and worked like a champ. Although not as fun as a framing nailer but you can't shoot yer eye out!

Or use a Bostitch Strap Shot. Shoots 1 1/2 and 2 1/2" HDG #10 nails specifically made for joist hangers. The nail point is your pressure point to release the trigger. It must be centered in your hanger hole in order for it to work. Regular framing nails won't work. You have to use HDG nails, so either hand nailing them or using a palm nailer.

I have the bostitch palm nailer (impact nailer) so I think I'll just use that.

It's a real pain you can't find 21-degree nails locally
