Filling gaps in base moulding

I am installing base moulding and there are a couple large gaps in the corners that I need to fill. I've used caulk in the past for smaller gaps, but these are about 1/8" (walls are whacked out). Can I get away with using sheetrock mud, or do I need to use something more conducive such as wood filler?

A quality caulk is your best best because it remains flexible.

Ya, using painter's putty, j/c or spackling runs the risk that it might come loose over time. Caulking is the best solution!

Ok. Caulking it is. May have to apply a couple times because of shrinkage (some gaps are larger than 1/8"). Used putty for two corners last night just to experiment, and it looks like crap, and isn't very easy to use in tight corners. Thanks.

Sometimes we forget a putty knife is called that because it's original function is to both press in place and remove excess putty

If done correctly, a better looking job can be had with putty BUT caulking is easier and will hold up better

You didn't say if you're painting or staining? If you have a power miter saw or table saw (good control) you might consider cutting a thin slice of molding to fill the gap.
