Newbie- Help with support beam question

Hello everyone
I have a rookie question. I live in a two story house with the second story sitting above my garage. Theres a huge beam going across my garage that supports the second story. I want to install a simple pull up bar using black pipe and floor flanges. My question is... Can i screw 4 inch lag screws into the beam either through the bottom or the side to install the pull up bar? Im wondering if making 8- 5/16 inch holes will compromise its structural integrity. Thank you for your help.

Welcome to the forums! What are the dimensions of the beam? In which direction do you plan on placing the fasteners? From the bottom or side?

Technically speaking, holes should not be placed in the middle 1/3 of the span of the beam. The outer 1/3 would be okay. So if you wanted to play it safe, the outer 1/3 would be best. That way the holes and your additional weight would not put additional stress on the middle of the beam.

that makes sense. thank you. But does it make a difference if the holes are through the side or from underneath?

Through the side would probably be better.
