stained wood windows
The windows in our house were stained by the builder but there was never a shellac put on them. After several Winters in the Midwest with plastic on the windows they are looking shabby. What should I use to clean the wood before I put another coat of stain on them and add a varnish?

Wipe them down with paint thinner. Take a good look at the color of the wood while wet. If you like the color, you don't need to stain them - just apply a finish.
The paint thinner will remove the grime, etc., just let them dry overnight before applying either a finish or stain.
