Right size base cap moulding?

Is this the right size base cap moulding for 1x stock (e.g. 1x4)?

I assume I should be going by the total thickness (11/16") and then the "seat" of the base cap ends up recessed from the face of the square base moulding below. Is that right?

What do you do with the gap between the two pieces? Caulk it? Anything else I should know about installation? Thanks in advance!

Yep that is it. You can caulk where it meets the 1x but for the most part that gap isn't noticeable except near a stairwell coming up from below.

Great, thanks! No stairs, so the gap won't be a problem.
