Faux beam wrap
I'm putting faux collar ties in a room with a vaulted truss ceiling. I plan to use 2x4s mounted before I drywall and then wrapping them in rough cedar to finish. I'm wondering which is easier and will look better, to drywall first and then wrap or vice versa. Any thoughts or experience to share?

While it might look more authentic to install the cedar first and then drywall around it - it's difficult to keep the joint compound and gypsum off of the cedar. IMO it would be best to do the drywall first.

Yes, you want to drywall first. That way the final trim covers the edges of the drywall which will probably have a slight gap that needs to be caulked.

Take a look at some of the faux beams they sell, incredibly detailed and sooo easy to install!

Thanks, I was leaning in that direction. I just hope I can get a clean line. As for the faux beams, I looked at those and if I were doing a ridge beam I would go with them, but for the collar ties they don't have the dimensions I want. The cedar will be cheap and will match the beams on the porch right outside the door.
