What Polyurethane should I use on stair rails?

What Polyurethane should I use on stair rails?

We gel stained the hand rails and now want to use polyurethane. What is the best to buy for this.

IMO the General Finishes brand of top coatings sold at Woodcrafters is some of he best materials for furniture!

Do you need that level of quality for a handrail?

Most any poly or varnish will do fine. Oil base poly [my preference] will deepen the stain color some while a water based poly will just give it a sheen. It generally takes 3 coats, sanding and removing the dust between coats. With water based poly you need to make sure the stain is good and dry first.

FWIW...I used a water based poly awhile back. Did not like the way it spread on the wood. It did not flow like oil based would. However the end results we fine.

ya, and it's kind of funky how it goes on milky but dries clear.
