Using water to raise the grain?
Just curious about this. Other than to make a piece of wood appear water damaged, is there any time when you would want to use water to raise the grain on the wood prior to other finishing steps? Can this ever be a good thing?

Believe it or not, the answer is yes - sometimes.
If you plan on using a water based finish, you can raise the grain slightly by using a damp sponge. When dry, sand smooth and apply water base finish. The grain will not raise as much as omitting step one.
