replacing trim

i just scraped and painted my walls and now want to replace the trim and have new carpets installed...what tools do i need to accomplish cutting trim with perfect 45 degree angles....also what type of nails should i use.....any tips for perfect 45 degree angles....also should i paint trim before attaching to wall or after

You can cut good 45 degree miters with a manual(plastic or wooden) miterbox and back saw. Hold the wood steady, or clamp it, throughout the cut process. Of course, a power miter saw is quicker.
You want to use finishing nails and countersink the heads and fill the holes with spackle. The trim can be painted first, then after it is installed simply touch up any spots.
