Corral Fence paint/stain?

Hi, I couldn't find a section on fences, so thought I'd try here. We have an old oak corral fence that has been pressure washed and is now ready for the finish. I've heard that stain will mean less maintenance. I like the look of a white fence, as well as the natural look. Any info on that?

Also, if we choose to paint, what type would be the best for this project? With all the work we're going to, I want it to last as long as possible.

So,
1) paint vs. stain?
2) type?

Thanks for the help.

It sounds like you are looking for a white picket fence. Why not go with a white transparent oil based stain? I just did my deck with a gray transparent and it came out beautiful. Enough color to notice but it is also now waterproofed and it wears well, some of the wood grain shows through and it doesn't chip or peel. In a few years, all you have to do is re-stain. The oil is sucked into the wood, helping to preserve it. Check at your home center.

Thank you for the info. The stain sounds very nice. This isn't a picket fence, but a corral fence, attached to the barn, but the idea of not having flaking paint sounds very good to me.

Hi Marcia,

A good oil base stain on a fence should last quite a few years.
Find one with color(cedar/redwood or white/grey) and uv protection.

BTW - don't get an acrylic stain - it will peel also.

see ya,

Thanks, Fred for the info.

We bought oil base paint, but might return it, depending. (My children do most of our shopping for us. They like to shop; I like to garden. I think I've seen your name on the garden message boards. )

Do you know which one will last longer: oil base paint or oil base stain?

Thanks,
Marcia

DO YA THINK??

Hey, the paint will peel - period.

The stain will fade after a couple years, but it won't peel.

see ya at the other place,
fred
