I have heard of professionals using the regular extraction method. As long as the backing is not soaked, then the sub floor is ok. DIY machines on the other hand tend to put down way too much moisture with little water pickup. That could be a issue. So, professional cleaning may be the best option.

As indicated, professional carpet cleaning tends to be the best option. The pros have the best equipment and experience for cleaning carpet. They tend to have the equipment with enough suction to remove excess moisuture to avoid mold & mildew problems, hot enough water ( 180 degrees plus to disinefect), cleaners to avoid residue problems that attract rapid resoiling and potential stain problems. If you ever opt for a different type floor covering you will need to get rid of the particle board. It is not acceptable for anything but carpet.
