Unhappy Yellowing Cultured Marble

My Cultured Marble sinks, in both bathrooms are turning yellowish. It may be from the florescent lighting. They also have a few scratches. Someone mentioned to use a polish on it but the only one someone recommended is Gel Gloss. I was hoping to be able to whiten them up some and polish them with something that is a little longer lasting than a wax. Any suggestions would be grand.

Yellowing and discoloration of cultured marble around drain is not uncommon. There is a gel coat over the cultured marble layer--more on some brands than others. Water with high iron content can leave stains. BarKeeper's Friend or Zud are powdered cleansers that can be mixed with water to form a paste to clean off rust stains. If stain appears to lighten, repeat as needed. Once stains are removed, polish and keep sealed with Gel Coat, auto wax, or other non-yellowing wax. Depending on thickness and quality of gel coat, sometimes scratches and certain stains can be buffed out with Gel Coat. Polish or wax often minimizes the appearance of scratches. Synthetic or cultured marble cannot be polished with products for natural stone or abrasives because gloss will be reduced. Abrasives should not be used on gel coat on cultured marble.

Discoloration of gel coat can also be attributed to heat from hot water. Sometimes gel-coat cracks in drain area due to thermal shock and mold and mildew form along cracks beneath gel coat. These discolorations are permanent.

Discoloration can also be caused by Clorox and other hypochlorite bleaches, hydrogen peroxide, drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, fingernail polish remover (acetone), certain paint strippers, abrasive powdered cleansers, and other harsh household cleaners.
