How do I remove tar from shoes?

Google showed WD 40 and/or Dawn dish detergent.

I have neither in the house,

Goo Gone says don't use on rubber

I don't want to ruin the shoes.....

Murphy soap oil or?

help appreciated

Oil soap won't be very effective. Frankly I can't see dawn working very well either. On oil yes, but not tar. I looked at Goof Off (which I use to clean tar off tools and cars and don't see a mention of damaging rubber...but it does say to test surfaces first.

WD40 would be my first choice...even if you have to go buy some. Goop hand cleaner may also work, if you are careful not to spread the tar around.

I'd be tempted to use mineral spirits, gas or kerosene - it will soften and remove the tar, you just need to be mindful that it might also harm the shoes..... but I would think as long as you don't over use the solvent or soak the shoes, it should be ok. A little bit of common sense goes a long way

Vic, I don't know what 'goof off' is made of but I doubt mineral spirits would be a main ingredient. Goof Off will dissolve dried latex paint, mineral spirits will not.

Try karna kleen. I used to be a commercial roofer and this stuff is great. I've used it on numerous items. From grout to glass shower doors or tub surrounds. Only problem is that it's hard to find. Typically it is sold at roofing supply places, but you might be able to find it by Googling it. I've used it to get the tar out of the damn dryer from my clothes as well as on my shoes. You will not be disappointed if you can find it. Buy two bottles if you do!
