Rusty mildewy smelling steam iron

My Granddaughter used one of my Steam Irons and put it away with water in it - that was 6 months ago. I took it out to use a couple of weeks ago, and emptied the water and rinsed it a couple of times but it smells awful when I filled it with water, turned it on and used steam to iron. I tried filling it with vinegar and letting it sit for a couple of days, rinsed it and tried it again - but it still stinks. Anybody have any other ideas? It's not all that valuable, but I hate tossing an otherwise good iron.

Did you just leave the vinegar in the iron, or did you "run" the iron-creating vinegar steam(?)? Maybe the smell is in the steam delivery tubes as well as the tank.
