These gutters haven't been cleaned in fifty years. What might at least make them look a little more presentable? Some cleaning solution? A power washer? Any suggestions? Thanks.
They changed the formulation some years back, so I doubt its as good as it once was, but Westley's Blech-wite used to be the bomb for cleaning stains off gutters. Its a white wall tire cleaner. Wet it, let it soak, scrub it, rinse & repeat.
But the finish on gutters that old might be shot by now.
There's mold all over everything.
I'd spray it down with bleach and water 50/50 with a pump sprayer, or use a pressure washer with the spray nozzle and use bleach on the suction line, wait an hour then pressure wash it.
Agree, tire cleaner is what I use all the time. I use one of the large industrial spray bottles and a brush like this and it cuts right through all the grime that collects on the gutters. They have theses at Lowes!
I usually spray a bleach solution on it, let it set but not dry and then use a pressure washer to rinse it. When that doesn't get it good enough I often use 409, Greased Lightning or similar and hand wash.
Clean aluminum paints well so that is also an option.
Because of COVID I couldn't get bleach or outdoor cleaners with bleach to do my sorta regular house pressure washing. This spring I tried just with a pressure washer and it got 75% off but you could still see the mildew when you got within 10 feet. I used Clorox Outdoor Bleach in the strongest mix they recommend and the gutters were mostly white even before I pressure washed. The key is to spray the cleaner on while the gutters are dry. Give it a few minutes but make sure to pressure wash before it dries.
I have tried bleach alone and it works about as well as the outdoor bleach on mildew. I notice that the outdoor cleaner does better than bleach when there is dirt or bird poo to remove.
I have polished aluminum motorcycle struts that are impossible to get to shine. The only thing that will loosen the dirt is master formula BUT the loosened dirt just smears around the struts and takes many cloths to get off and even then not completely.
Whenever I have corroded electrical parts I soak them in cleaning vinegar overnight so the crusty stuff comes off and they can make clean contact but I also noticed they shine after the soaking.
If the cleaning vinegar isn't going to be too harsh and damage the polished aluminum I'm willing to take off the struts and let them soak
