Best way to get rust off an intricate key

Metal polish like simichrome is difficult because there's no smooth surface to bear down on, any sort of brush scrubbing whisks away the polish

I would use an ultrasonic or vibratory parts cleaner. If you don't have access to either of them I'd just use some polishing paste and an old toothbrush or wire brush. Of course it will rust again since the polishing will expose even more unprotected steel.

There are many commercial rust removers you could soak it in. PB Blaster is one.
You could also mixing water and baking soda into a thick paste and put the key in that.

Just drop it in a paper cup with some vinegar!
