reconfiguring bedroom closet
A "walk-in" closet in our bedroom is only 51" wide x 56" long. There are closet rods on each side (the 4' 8" length), which does not leave "walking" space between clothing. Directly behind the closet is a hallway bookcase (built-in, with the "box" visible in the back of the closet). The bookcase measures 35" wide x 52" high, 13" deep. I would like to reconfigure the closet by removing the bookcase, and putting a hall closet (which we do not have) in that space. The existing closet would be half it's size, but more accessible. Clothing rods would go across the width of the closets. Does this seem a workable solution to a crowded closet?

Yeah, sounds like a good idea to me. My wife's walk in closet is pretty narrow but at least you can get between the rows of clothing, yours sounds pretty much only half available to you now anyway.
