Need help with a second phone line
Hi folks, I was hoping for some insight...I tried all posted instructions that I could find online but I still could not get it to work.
I have three pairs of wires in my NID box, in the original setup, the primary phone line< the red and green wires> are in the proper red and green terminals and a purple and black wire were twisted and capped together as well as yellow and white wires. I took the yellow and black wires and installed it to red and green terminals respectively only to have it deactivate all the phone lines at the jack.
After this I tried many different permutations only to find out that sometimes the second phone line works but on the second terminal and the primary was dead or second line works on the 1st red and green terminal. Do you know what I should do with the loose white and purple wires?
Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks! - Lisa

If you have two telephone lines servicing the house then you need to have two phone lines, which means two pairs (four total wires) going to each telephone.
If you are adding a second line to an existing setup then you should not be touching the existing wires in any way shape or form.

We do have 2 sets of wires going to the jack. The phone company brought the service for the second line up to the box, but didn't hook up that wire for us because it was an additional charge. The red and green were hooked up for the primary line on the top of three compartments. The second compartment he left open for us and said that was where we should hook up the wires for the second line. There were 2 sets of additional wires - one set was purple and black - and that was capped off. The other set was yellow and white and those were also capped off. We have tried everything. We got the second line to work, but it deactivated the first phone line (which we hadn't touched.) Nothing is working. We have tried every possible combination. We can't find anything about purple and white online - could these be a ground or something?
Any more insight would be great!

for three pair cable with line one red /green
line two black /yellow
line 3 blue/ white
do you have a alarm or was there one at one time ?
how are the jacks wired ?
not real sure what you mean that the other wires were "capped off"
if you follow the above it should work
you may have to go to each jack and be sure the wires arent "capped off " further
