Removing a phone line from the street

Do I NEED the phone company to remove a phone line coming from the street, or is it legal (and safe) for a professional electrician to do it? Basically, who do I call here?

First of all, why are you removing a line from the street? Or do you just need it moved?

If you just want to disconnect it, do it at the NID outside (IE: you've got VoIP service, or digital service, so you don't need the analog line.)

If you have a good reason to actually remove the line, the phone company will have to do it.

BTW, I wouldn't recommend completely disconnecting analog phone service - most areas will give you a dial-tone for 911 service even without paying for service. Not a bad idea to have at least one line hooked up for 911 service.

Tell us about what you are doing.

There's two lines and on of them isn't even 10 feet off the ground. It's gotta go.

it is phone company property and it is still regulated meaning only authrized phone company personell may legally access it, (de-regualtion begains at the demark or NID )

that said its no big deal to remove it and as long as it is done properly and no damge done to phone company property or more importanatly to other subscribers

look for a private phone vendor in the yellow pages rather than electrcian chances are you will get someone who has worked for the phone company at one time and will know how to do it properly. for less money than the phone comapny is likley to charge.
