house wire... if new, w/b and b/w are the t & R (dialtone)... in the jack, the green and red connections are the terminals to use.. only need the two.. if you have the old wire, then the green to green and red to red... hopefully you don't have that stuff tho..

hello?

thanks for the reply...bought a new plug today, followed the instructions and still no dial tone....I had an electrical problem and blew a circuit breaker in the same room (kitchen), could there have been a power surge that would affect this phone jack?

The power surge would unlikely cause any problems with the telephone line. Do you have two lines working in the house? Like the previous guy mentioned use the red and green wires for an older home. But use the yellow and black wires if there was a 2nd line installed. That assumes that there weren't any problems on that line before and someone didn't "frog" the pairs. (Use an improper set of color codes.) I would open a nearby jack and see the color of the wires feeding it. Use the same ones. If that doesn't work, take a volt meter and look for 52v DC across 2 of the wires. That should be your pair. I hope that helps.
