Question Cat 5e wiring HELP

Ok I may be in above my head. I am finishing my basement and used CAT 5e wire, with 4 twisted pairs. So now I was going to start setting up phone lines and a LAN. However the 6 line (phone) and 8 line (computer) connectors do not match up to my color scheme in the wire. So now I am confused. Did I blow it with the twisted pair? Or do I use the whites wraped around the other colors as the "stripped" of the color they were wraped around. My head hurts.

If anyone knows a good site with a wiring diagram for the phone and computer please let me know. IE orange to orange, white from orange to white etc.

You did not blow it, you did the right thing. The white ones wrapped around the color wires are the white with that color stripe. The stripe can be hard to see on some cat5. Are you going to hook the phone lines directly to the NIB (telephone companies box) or are you doing a structured wiring box? Like this http://www.iautomate.com/attaboy.html. It would be easier in the long run.

Try this for the color code:

Hi,
I spent a few hours reading this site. It really is a great resource for telephone/DSL wiring. With good diagrams and examples. http://www.homephonewiring.com/
Good luck!
