Dumb question

Is there any site out there that will show me how to use a punch down tool. I worked for The phone company for 16 yrs as a service rep and a programmer, saw the guys use them, but never got close enough to see how they did it. I want to start wiring the house with Cat5E and would like to know how to use the tool I bought

Thanx

Hopefully you bought the tool with the correct type of blade for the style block you plan to use. There are type 66, 110 and a less common Krone.

If you look at the tool blade you should see that one side says CUT. This would go away from the incoming cable end. Seat the wire over the groove in the punchdown block, place the tool over the punchdown and push down. You should heard a snap and the extra wire should be cut off.

CAT5 wiring has specific requirements regarding how much wire is out of the jacket and also how much of the twisted pair can be untwisted.
