If you have electrical power out there, you try a cordless phone that has intercom capabilities. There are models that have multiple base units (only one needs a phone line) and allow intercom capabilities between the units.

well actually it doesnt need to be connected to the phone line if all you want is intercom capability .
if you run cable to the barn there are all kinds of intercoms scenarios that you could rig up

you don't even need a cable run if you have AC power out there, which most people do... just get one of those intercom units from Radio Junk and plug it in at each end.. they work fine, not expensive...

sorry, I've called it that for so long, I just typed it in without thinking about it.. used to be, there was a time that is, that you could actually buy something electronic, or components, or a useful item at Radio Shack... now, it seems like your going into a 5 & dime store.. other than the little ICM's and such, and of course they now deal cellphones..

Ive done a couple of service calls at radio shacks , talk about a freakin mess , they are of course all phone "experts " untill things dont work then its a matter of getting in making sense of and tracing the wiring past every cheopo made in china adapter that they have in place .
