I have vonage and decided to get my kitchen phone working again...I HAD been running the phone from the cable modem they provide straight to a telephone. I decided instead, to plug the phone cord from the modem into the wall plate so that I could use the houses existing wiring to bring life to all of my phones. So, to make a long story short, the kitchen phone doesn't have any dialtone unless the yellow and red wires are jumped (found this out by accident
) My question is: Is this normal or acceptable? And, might jumping it cause some sort of fire hazard?

I know it's been a few days, but hopefully the OP will get this message.
I highly doubt there would be any fire hazard seeing phone lines are low voltage.
What I think happened here is they used a "crossover cable" instead of a typical CAT5 cable run.
I see no problems with what you have set up.
