Phone acting like a "FAX" line

My phone is picking up after the second ring with a fax sound. My answering machine is set to pick up after 4 rings but it doesn't get the chance because after 2 rings my phone is sending a piercing fax sound.

If I can get to the phone and pick up before 2 rings I "beat" the phone from trying to send the signal out.

I have unplugged: my printer/fax; modem; router; PC; telephones; etc. EVERYTHING!

I went to the telephone box outside our home and plugged in an old phone and I do NOT get the fax sound. I came inside and plugged the same phone into the main phone jack and I DID receive the fax sound. Therefore, the phone company says it is not their problem.

Can someone make any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this problem. It only started after I got a new laptop and I don't know why???

Did you ever resolve this issue. It sounds exactly like a problem I'm having now!

Disconnect the laptop from the phone line. If that solves the problem, find the laptop's Modem/Fax settings and turn off auto-answer.

You don't say, but unless your phone has a fax machine in it's, it's not your phone. Also, fax machines don't 'answer' with a tone the way a modem does. They 'listen' for the calling machine to send a tone and only then do they respond.

It sounds to me like an alarm panel, or something else is on the line.

I had this issue. My alarm panel was picking up on the 2nd ring. Had to go into the panel properties and adjust the ring pickup.
