wiring old phone jack

Hi, We are renovating our home, and are replacing a wall jack for the phone. The nice new jack has 4 colored wires...the wire from the wall look like speaker wire...with 2 ends, not 4, and not color coded. Can we rewire this using these wires? if so, how? This would only be used for a phone...not internet.

Thanks,
Rin68nyr

You only need two wires for POTs. Doesn't much matter what wire. One wire to red one wire to green on the jack. Except in very rare cases such as a rotary phone it doesn't matter which wire to which. (Even with a rotary phone it would still work. You'd just hear the clicks as you dialed.)
