Turning the monitor off instead of using screensaver
Since I need to leave my computer on constantly, instead of using a screensaver, can I just turn the monitor off? I find that the monitor gives off alot of heat.

Apart from the power saving, it's a good idea because screen savers - or at least the poorly designed ones - can be real memory hogs. Even when inactive, they can refuse to release memory, thereby making that memory unavailable for other apps. Bit similar to the way TSRs work. (anyone remember them?)

Better than turning it completely off is to use the power saving (energy star) functions of the monitor. this puts the monitor in standby mode, but not completely off. It's no longer putting off heat, but doesn't take as long to come back on. It's also easier on the monitor than turning it completely off and on all the time.

I would say that if you're not going to use your computer for 1 hour or more turn off the monitor. Otherwise leave it on. While power saving features are nice, I noticed that most companies and consumers I worked for turn off all power management. I have them off on my machine, and I do that on most customers also. XP seems to be better, but 98/ME are terrible. They will not wake up more then half of the time.

The company I work for has several hundred computers, they all use full power management. They did some study and found they save something on the order of 20k per year, per location in electrical costs by having the computers turn the monitors (and themselves) off after a set time.
I always leave my monitor on, because I am constantly in and out. I've had 2 monitors die on me, both times it was when it was being turned on.

AMEN to the above advice. If you have ever used a constant-on computer with a screen saver after 1-2 years, you will see that the brightness goes to the toilet!! The colors soon follow.
