dvd record... what do I need?

I'm really new to this dvd thing but I've put it off long enough. I bought a dvd player for my home television and I also want a dvd recorder for my computer. What is +RW and -R, is it important for recordings? The two things I want to do is backup data and copy dvd disks that will be watchable in my dvd home player. Any suggestions what I need in hardware and software?

If you want to do both data and video you need a drive that does DVD-R and DVD-RAM. The RAM disk are specifially designed for data. I believe Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, and HP all make DVD-RAM/DVD-r/DVD-RW drives.

The differnce between -R and +R is that +R is newer (and may work in fewer DVD players). -R and -RW are both write all at once disks (or erase all at once for RW) +R and +RW are both multisession disks. Also, if you're going to do video you will need a video encoder card and software to convert the video to MPEG2.

One other option is to buy a stand alone DVD recorder. Philips makes several good +RW models the low end one sells for $700. Panasonic makes one for -R and RAM for about $150 less.
