no signal at video out connector

I installed a new ATI 9500 graphics card...but I can't get anything on the external video out connector.
The computer monitor works fine but I wanted to record a AVI video to a VCR but the graphics card doesn't send anything out of that jack.
Is there a setting or something else to check?

Thanks anyone!

Did you install the ATI software? If so, go to Display properties (either by right-clicking the desktop and clicking properties, or through the Control Panel), go to the Advanced Tab. Now, bare with me, I don't remember exactly how this works. You should see a bunch of ATI tabs at the top, I think the one you want is Displays or something like that (it will have 3-4 different boxes on it displaying different screens.) I have a VE with dual-monitor display and Vid Out, so mine may be a little different than your's. Anyway, you're looking for a TV display, the button above it will be red, click it and it will turn green and should turn on your Vid Out. Again, you have to have the software installed to make this work. If you go to Advanced Display properties and don't see the ATI tabs, you don't have the software installed. On my XP machine I don't have the software installed because XP also handles dual-monitor outputs (I actually like the way it handles them better.)

Good luck!

SafeWatch,
Thanks a lot for the reply.
I ended up finding out that I didn't have the ATI software installed (I had initially just installed the drivers and nothing else).
I'm using XPpro and I didn't know that it had dual monitor capabilities. I'll have to look into that.

Now that the ATI software is installed...I did as you suggested and it works fine on my t.v.

The only problem is that...the t.v. doesn't display anything when I play an mpeg or avi file. It's strange because it displays everything else except the actual avi video signal.
...any suggestions on this symptom?

thanks again!

There is no solution for that. The cards do not support Mpeg over the Vid Out. My card is the same way. I looked everywhere for a solution. The only one is to get a card that supports Mpeg through the Vid Out, and they are too expensive. I wanted to play DivX files to my TV, just like a DVD, but it doesn't work. Oh well, if you find a solution, let me know - I'll do the same.

I'm determined to find a way for this to work. I'm using Vegas Video for video/audio editing and rendering files.

I'll let you know what I find out.

well, my radeon 8500 works, but the easiest way would be to burn it to vcd and watch it through the dvd player.

tae,
are you saying that... if you play an avi file from your computer, through the tv-out connector...that you will be able to see it on your tv?
If so, than I'm not sure what you are doing right.

My friend has an radeon 8500 and they are not able to view the avi or mpeg files through their tv-out connector.

Yes, I can play movies on the tv. I run the s video to an rca adapter to the vcr, to the tv. @ of the big features of the card are video capture and tv out. Why would they let you capture it in avi or mpeg and then not allow you to view it on the tv? You can email ati support and they will give you help setting it up correctly and playing the files correctly.

thanks tae,
by the fact that you were able to do this...inspired me to get the initiative to look into my ATI settings a little further.

It turns out that I was able to do this and record to VCR.

All I had to do was... to make my TV the primary monitor and the computer monitor is the secondary...and it worked.

Safehouse,

I hope you're able to do the same. Good luck!
