Startup Options
This is a PM from an anonymous poster that wants some information on startup options, and I threw in the Defragging from Safe Mode to get some other opinions.
I think this person uses Windows 98 or 98SE, maybe ME, regardless, they are basically the same.
Mainly, what I'm looking for is the explanation of the startup options. Haven't run Win98 in a couple of years, so I don't remember all the options.
Thanks for the input.

I did the computer maintance from within the safe mode as you suggested. All went well. Thanks. Hard drive is now quite. No ticking noises like before but wasn't any earlier today either prior to attempting to run scan disk either. Outside the safe mode same problem existed. Insdie not so. Periodic activity interrupting scan disk. Nothing now as I type this either. Same problem even after shutting down all unneeded behind the scenes running problems prior to safe mode. Still wondering what in the hell it could be or could have been?
Safe mode had several other selections besides safe mode. What are they all for and about? I seem computer illiterate I know. But I am not the pro you are and if asking helps to learn so be it.

Win98se Startup Options
Normal - If you select Normal, Windows will start up as if you had selected Step-by-step confirmation and said "Yes" to every prompt
Logged - Lists load failures
Step-by-step - During a step-by-step startup Windows asks you whether it should load or not load specific drivers. The main advantage of this startup is that you eliminate all the DOS level drivers and environmental settings. You can selectively load or not load drivers and applets contained in the registry and the System.ini and Win.ini files.
Command promt only
Safe mode command prompt only
Both options try to boot directly to the Windows command prompt; however, Safe mode command prompt only will bypass all startup files entirely. Windows Me does not allow you to boot into a command prompt.

Boot to a DOS prompt, I have all systems I setup with 98 to boot to the prompt first.
Then, just type win /? [enter]
Presto, startup options list, including some not on the 'boot menu'.

Ok, we got the Boot Menu question answered, now if one of you Win98 users could answer this question about adjusting Virtual Memory in Win98. I don't remember exactly what all the tabs are called in 98. Thanks Guys.
The windows version I am using is windows 98. The system resources are currently: System 73% User 73% and GDI 78%. The computer has 192 ram, pentium 2 processor,
I never did find that virtual memory selection location. I did see it once before but forgot where? Where could it be? Which folder? How do I get to it? If my brain memory serves me, it was a slider value which can be raised or lowered in some folder.
Problem is not being able to locate where it is.
